HIGHLIGHTS

Our Elementary School program uses social and natural phenomena as contexts to develop the basic skills of reading, writing, and arithmetic, as well as future-oriented life skills such as Ethical Leadership, Expert Thinking, and Empathetic Social skills. Learners are empowered to make good choices while developing project management skills, and a STEAM mindset in coming up with innovative solutions for real life sustainability issues, using contemporary technology, wherever applicable.

Learners develop at their own pace and their needs vary greatly from one another. Teachers do their best to attend to these needs both academically and non-academically. In a multi-age classroom, learning is personalized for learners based on their unique needs. The learners receive opportunities to co-create the learning with their teachers through choices, continuous reflection, and the management of their own learning portfolio.

Multi-age

In a multi-age classroom, learners of different ages are grouped together. For example, 2nd and 3rd grade learners are put together in grade level 2-3 because they are at the same social-emotional development milestone.

In real life, we interact with people of different ages in various settings. When learners are accustomed to this situation from an early age, we are preparing them to face real life situations from early on. Research has shown that this setting maximizes social-emotional development, as well as academic performance. It helps learners develop empathy and leadership, where older and younger learners respect and learn from each other.

Making Good Choices (MAGIC)

MAGIC is a special class where learners apply project management skills in a topic of interest that can benefit themselves as well as others. Learners typically choose a daily life problem and work on creating an innovative solution to solve it, according to their interest and level of development.

STEAM Mindset

STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. That said, we believe that STEAM is not just about the activities. Instead, it's about creating a mindset of coming up with innovative solutions using Scientific inquiries, the right technology, design thinking, empathy and emotional appeal. All of this is practiced throughout the daily routines in multiple contexts.

An example of how the STEAM mindset is developed is during project-based learning. Learners explore problems in their surroundings and work to find an innovative solution to the problem by utilizing research skills (scientific inquiries), mathematical problem solving skills, while using technology.

Q: What is Multi-Age?

The multi-age class is a class consisting of students who are 1-2 years apart in age, in the same class. This multi-age class describes a real life situation where students interact with other students of different ages and abilities, e.g. grade K with grade 1, grade 2 with grade 3, and so on. Research shows that multi-age classrooms develop interpersonal and academic skills.

If we view it from everyday life (real life), e. g., in our work environment, we work with people who are different ages to collaborate and produce something worthwhile. HighScope believes that by providing these real life experiences, children will learn how to socialize with people of different ages. That's why HighScope runs the Multi-age Classroom consisting of a combination of adjacent ages in the same class.
