“HighScope gave me the platform to practice my skills consistently, the grading system that taught me how to exceed expectations, and the feedback mechanism that allowed me to assess my growth.”
What can you tell us about your time at HighScope?
Looking back, I know that my time at HighScope had a big part in my journey.
When I first joined in 2nd Grade, I was such a shy person. But at HighScope I was encouraged to be part of so many different communities. I was Vice President of the Student Council, CEO of the Virtual Enterprises Class, Secretary General of High Scope Model United Nations, and I was also active in the futsal and basketball clubs.
HighScope gave us the opportunity to join so many competitions. For me, most memorable were the Youth Business Summit and the Virtual Enterprise competition where we had a trade show in New York.
How did studying in HighScope help you during university?
The main challenge I had upon joining the Faculty of Law was transitioning from a science major to social studies major. I also had to adapt to the lectures because I was used to a different learning style. But I was able to overcome these because HighScope had taught me how to adapt and innovate. So, I started implementing the active learning style I learned at HighScope by creating a study group.
During university, I was also active in competitions and organizations. The presentation and collaboration skills I learned in HighScope proved to be very useful. I ended up leading a total of 250 students in 2 university-level committees. I felt that this was the result of everything that I invested from such an early age at HighScope.
Do you think studying at HighScope has also helped you in your career?
Earlier, I mentioned joining competitions that allowed international exposure. I feel that that is very relevant to me now, because I’m the only Indonesian on my team and I have to interact with people from diverse cultural backgrounds on a daily basis.
Something else that I find very applicable to my job right now is project management. When we did Plan-Do-Review at an early age, it seemed very simple. But now I get to apply the same skills on a more complex platform.
What do you think are the most useful soft skills you learned at HighScope?
There are many useful soft skills, such as public speaking, leadership, effective communication, and project management. But I think the most important thing to have is a growth mindset.
This mindset comes from cultivating those soft skills from a young age. HighScope gave me the platform to practice my skills consistently, the grading system that taught me how to exceed expectations, and the feedback mechanism that allowed me to assess my growth. Once I became more confident in my skills, I became more comfortable with taking on bigger roles and opportunities.
Is there a life lesson that you gained from HighScope?
The growth mindset I got from HighScope really helps me have a positive view on life. Life is a constant journey of learning, relearning, and unlearning.
