Q: What is the HighScope Curriculum?

A: HighScope Indonesia is a Sekolah Perjanjian Kerjasama (SPK), because HighScope Indonesia applies the National Curriculum integrated with the HighScope Curriculum. HighScope's educational approach emphasizes "active participatory learning." Active learning means students have direct, hands-on experiences with people, objects, events, and ideas. Children's interests and choices are at the heart of HighScope programs.

HighScope Indonesia focuses on the process of learning, not only on the output where students follow, memorize and pass tests and exams. We treat students as human beings who are able to think, comprehend, understand, manage and lead in the challenging times of the 21st century.

To achieve this long-term objective, students will be taught and then practice skills needed, such as:

Students apply these skills in the subject taught as well as in the Plan-Do-Review, during which students undertake projects that are initiated, planned, carried out, presented and reviewed by students.

 

Q: Is HighScope Indonesia accredited?

A: Accreditation is a process undertaken by government agencies & foreign institutions to assess whether an educational institution has met certain standards.

Currently most of our schools are accredited “A” or “DISAMAKAN from the government.

Sekolah HighScope Indonesia – TB.Simatupang has also received accreditation from Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

WASC is a world-renowned accrediting association, a regional accrediting association in the United States and works closely with the Office of Overseas Schools under the Department of State.

 

Q: What is Multiage classroom?

A:  Sekolah HighScope Indonesia implements multiage practices, in which the students are grouped according to their social group, not according to grade. The multiage classroom is grouped for 2 grades such as grade K-1, grade 2-3 

 

Q: Why does HighScope implement the Multiage system?

A:

  • To get real life experiences, which are not separated by age, where students can learn socialization with different age groups.

  • Emphasizes the idea that children are unique individuals rather than age or grade-specific.

  • Provides a wider range of individual differences and developmental stages.

  • Allows students to proceed at their own pace, no retention (unless the student is frequently absent from school).

  • Encourages more variety of purposeful instructional methods and materials.

  • Allows teachers to monitor student growth and development for a longer period of time.

  • Multi-age classes can also minimize bullying because with the age difference they learn to respect each other.

 

Q: What language is used in the Sekolah HighScope Indonesia Elementary Program?

A: HighScope Indonesia implements a Dual Language program.  This program provides opportunities for students to use both English and Indonesian in academic and social situations.  As we have an “additive bilingual approach”, we respect and continue the development of the first language.  A high level of proficiency in two languages is the goal of dual language education. 

Students are given opportunities to develop Indonesian and English simultaneously.  Our students continue to develop their language skills, including social language, in an academic environment.  “Language of the Day” serves this purpose; each language, either Indonesian or English, is used on alternate days, so the students will alternate between using English and Indonesian throughout the week.  All school staff and other adults (including parents when at school) must follow and use the language schedule of that day.

 

Q: What are the requirements to become a HighScope teacher?

A:   The requirements are:

  1. Have passion for teaching young children

  2. Undergraduate Degree from the same background with the subject that they going teach

  3. Proficient English both verbal & written

  4. Pass the psychological test

  5. Pass the observation class

  6. Pass the competence test for the subject that they going teach

  7. Pass demo teaching & interview with the principal

  8. Pass the Medical test

  9. Pass the 8 week HighScope teacher training program

 

Q: Is there any homework in Elementary program?

A: Sekolah HighScope Indonesia applies homework that is adjusted to student grades.  The homework is divided into core subject assignments (such as English, Indonesian, Science, Social Studies & Math), weekly assigments, reading assigments & quick homework. We arrange homework schedules by readiness based on student grades.

 

Q: Are students required to take the National Exam? And, how does HighScope prepare students for the National Exam?

A: Government Regulations require all Indonesian student citizens to take the National Exam. Therefore, HighScope Indonesia School provides "Support Guidance" to prepare 6th, 9th & 12th grade students to prepare for the National Exam. This Tutoring continues over 9 months twice a week after school hours.

Q: How does HighScope assess children in the Elementary program?

A: The student centered approach requires teachers to be assessment specialists. This implies that assessment must be conducted in an ongoing process since the aim of assessment is to get a true picture of students in all aspects of development, so that they can get appropriate support to maximize their potential.

The ongoing and authentic nature of the SHI assessment program uses multiple sources of evidence to document and support student progress. As opposed to traditional assessment methods that rely on tests as the only tool to provide data about students, SHI assessment makes use of a variety of evidence taken from various assessment methods to provide a complete picture of student progress.

At the end of each term, teachers summarize student progress in subject achievement and report that progress in the assessment and progress report, Summary of Learning Journey.

The Summary of Learning Journey is completed with the Learner Outcomes and Plan-Do-Review report at the end of Term 4.
